New: STAR Credit Direct Deposit pilot for Nassau and Suffolk Counties
Beginning in September 2023, STAR credit recipients in Nassau and Suffolk Counties can enroll to receive their STAR credit payments by direct deposit, rather than by check. Note: We've already issued 2023 STAR credit checks to homeowners in the City of Glen Cove (Nassau County). Homeowners in the City of Glen Cove may enroll in STAR Credit Direct Deposit for 2024.
In 2024, we plan to make STAR Credit Direct Deposit available to homeowners statewide. Homeowners who live outside of Nassau or Suffolk County and who enroll in STAR Credit Direct Deposit can expect to receive their credit by check in 2023 and by direct deposit in future years, as long as they’re eligible.
Homeowners will receive a check if they enroll in STAR Credit Direct Deposit fewer than 15 days before we issue their STAR credit. See our STAR Credit Delivery Schedule to learn when we will begin issuing credits in your area.
Note: Enrolling in STAR Credit Direct Deposit does not register a homeowner for the STAR credit. Homeowners must be registered for the STAR credit on their primary residence before they can receive the credit by direct deposit. Homeowners who are currently receiving the STAR exemption and who enroll in STAR Credit Direct Deposit will continue to receive a reduction on their school property tax bill as long as they remain eligible. For more information, visit our frequently asked questions on this topic.
How to enroll
Homeowners can enroll in STAR Credit Direct Deposit by logging into or creating a Tax Department Individual Online Services account.
Outreach to homeowners
The Tax Department is mailing letters to homeowners in Nassau and Suffolk Counties to inform them of the new STAR Credit Direct Deposit program.
In addition, we will send homeowners a confirmation letter and email when they:
- enroll in STAR Credit Direct Deposit,
- update bank account information, or
- terminate their participation in STAR Credit Direct Deposit.
