Make a payment when you have an extension of time to file

If you need to make a payment but have an extension of time to file your personal income tax, partnership, or fiduciary return, you can make your payment directly on our website or using tax preparation software.

How to pay electronically through our website (individuals only)

You can pay directly from your preferred account or by credit card—when you file your extension—through your Individual Online Services account.

Pay from account with a bank or banking services provider (free)

Authorize a direct debit from your preferred account with a bank or banking services provider and:

  • schedule payments in advance,
  • save your bank account information, and
  • receive instant confirmation from the New York State Tax Department.

Your bank statement will indicate our receipt of your payment with an NYS Tax Payment line item for the authorized amount.

Pay by credit card (2.20% convenience fee)

We have updated our credit card features to:

  • provide easy-to-use payment screens,
  • quicken the process, and
  • simplify your payment experience

Ready?

Simply log in to your Individual Online Services account, select Payments, bills and notices from the menu in the upper left corner, then select Make a payment, and then Make an extension payment from the drop-down. (You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one.)

How to pay electronically using tax preparation software

You must make your payments directly from your bank account if you file your extension using tax preparation software.

Your bank statement will indicate our receipt of your payment with a NYS Tax Payment line item for the authorized amount.

Is your payment amount incorrect?

If you paid less than the amount owed, submit the difference between the amount paid and the amount owed. You can pay directly from your bank account through Online Services. Simply log in to your account, select Payments, bills and notices from the menu in the upper left-hand corner of your screen, select Make a Payment, then Make an extension payment.

If you overpaid and are owed a refund, you don't need to do anything.

Not ready to pay electronically?

Use Form IT-370-V, Payment Voucher, or Form IT-370-PF, Payment Voucher for Partnerships and Fiduciaries, to mail in a check or money order.

Note: You must apply for an extension of time to file your return when you mail in your payment voucher; simply mailing in a payment voucher to pay the tax due is not sufficient.

You must:

  • Write your Social Security number and 2023 Income Tax on your check or money order. (If filing a joint return, write the Social Security number of only the taxpayer whose name will appear first on the return.)
  • Make your check or money order payable to New York State Income Tax.
  • Mail your payment to:
