The Department audits, investigates, and collects taxes from individuals and businesses to help ensure that all New Yorkers pay their fair share of taxes. If you're audited, we may bill you for additional tax, penalties and interest; deny a refund or credit you claimed, propose a refund; or make no change at all.
We'll contact you if you fail to pay a tax bill (assessment) and have exhausted all appeal rights or your rights have expired. If you have an unpaid tax bill, you should pay it immediately to avoid accruing additional penalties, interest, and the start of civil enforcement actions.
