General filing information
- Each tax year starts on January 1 and ends on December 31.
- Generally, your return is due April 15, although this date can change if there are federal or local holidays.
- If you cannot file by this date, you can request an automatic 6 month extension of time to file (to October 15) by filing Form IT-370, Application for Automatic Six Month Extension of Time to File for Individuals.
Note: An extension is only good for filing the return. It does not include an extension of time to pay the tax due.
