STAR seminars for homeowners
The New York State Office of Real Property Tax Services invites you to a seminar to learn more about the School Tax Rebate (STAR) program.
In each presentation, we will share with homeowners:
- a brief history of the program,
- what to expect from the program if you are already enrolled,
- and steps on how to enroll if you are a new homeowner.
We will also cover our most common FAQs and have staff on site to help new homeowners register at self-service kiosks.
Each event is open to the public; preregistration is not required.
What to bring to the seminar
Register for STAR
If you plan on registering for STAR at the event, have the following information readily available:
- names and Social Security numbers for all owners of the property and their spouses
- name of the school district where your primary residence is located
- approximate date the owners purchased the property
- names of the sellers (not required, but may help ensure you receive your credit before school taxes are due)
- most recent school tax bill, if the current owners received one (view examples)
- address of any residential property owned in another state
- legal name of the trust, if applicable
- 2024 federal or state income tax returns for all owners
If you were not required to file a 2024 income tax return, you will need the following additional information for all property owners:
- total wages, salaries, and tips
- taxable interest income and dividends
- unemployment compensation
- total pensions and annuities
- Social Security benefits
- other income
Report your income (if you received a letter requesting it)
On the day of the event, be sure to bring:
- a copy of your RP-5300-WSC letter, if you received one; and
- all documentation of 2024 income for all resident owners and spouses who reside at the property, including:
- total wages, salaries, and tips
- taxable interest income and dividends
- unemployment compensation
- taxable amount of total distributions from IRAs (individual retirement accounts and individual retirement annuities)
- total pensions and annuities (excluding IRA distributions)
- Social Security benefits (including Medicare premiums)
- other income
Respond to a STAR letter
On the day of the event, be sure to bring:
- a copy of your letter,
- a brief letter of explanation, and
- supporting documentation.
If you have additonal questions about the letter you received, staff can assist you at the event.
