Browser requirements and troubleshooting tips

To have the best experience possible, your Internet browser must be compatible with the sales tax Certificate of Authority application, and the cigarette and tobacco registration application. Follow the steps below to review and update your browser.

Compatible browsers

  • Internet Explorer 10 and 11 (recommended)
  • Firefox 32
  • Chrome 37
  • Safari 6

Check your browser version

If you're unsure which browser version you're using (for example, Internet Explorer 10 or Internet Explorer 11), refer to the tables below for instructions about  locating this information.

Windows operating system instructions
If your device runs off a Windows operating system and you're usingyou should
Internet Explorer,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the tools icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Help from the drop-down (if you do not see Help, continue to step 4).
  4. Select About Internet Explorer from the fly-out menu (or possibly the drop-down).
  5. An About Internet Explorer window will pop up; locate the version number listed to the right of the Internet Explorer icon.
Mozilla Firefox,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the Firefox tab in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Help from the drop-down.
  4. Select About Firefox from the fly-out menu.
  5. An About Mozilla Firefox window will pop up; locate the version number listed to the right of the Firefox icon.
Google Chrome,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the menu icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Help from the drop-down.
  4. Select About Google Chrome from the fly-out menu.
  5. An About window will pop up; locate the version number listed below the Google Chrome icon.

 

Macintosh operating system requirements
If your device runs off a Macintosh operating system and you're usingyou should
Apple Safari,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select Safari in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select About Safari from the drop-down.
  4. An About Safari window will pop up; locate the version number listed below the Safari name.
Mozilla Firefox,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the Firefox tab in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select About Mozilla Firefox from the drop-down.
  4. A window will pop up; locate the version number listed below the Firefox name.
Google Chrome,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select Chrome in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select About Google Chrome from the fly-out menu.
  4. A window will pop up; locate the version number listed to the right of "version."

Windows 10 users: If you have Windows 10, you may want to change your default browser from Windows Edge to Internet Explorer.

Change from Windows Edge to Internet Explorer

  1. Right-click the Windows icon (lower-left corner of your screen, on the task bar), and select Search from the drop-down menu.
  2. Enter Control Panel in the Search the web and Windows field. The system will return Best match results.
  3. Select Control Panel to view the available settings.
  4. Select Network and Internet to view more options.
  5. From the left-hand options list, select Programs, then select Set your default programs.
  6. Within the list of programs, locate and select Internet Explorer.
  7. Choose Set this program as default, then select OK to verify the change.
  8. Close the Control Panel.

Turn off auto-fill and auto-complete settings

If you are using a compatible browser but still having issues using the NYS License Center website, you may need to turn off your browser’s auto-fill or auto-complete settings.

Internet Explorer,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the tools icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Internet Options from the drop-down.
  4. Select the Content tab in the pop-up window.
  5. Select Settings in the AutoComplete
  6. Uncheck User names and passwords on forms.
  7. Select OK to close the windows.
Mozilla Firefox,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the Firefox tab in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select History from the drop-down.
  4. Select Clear Recent History from the fly-out menu.
  5. Complete the Time range to clear field using the drop-down list; choose Everything.
  6. A warning window will pop up; expand the Details section.
  7. Check Form & Search History.
  8. Select Clear Now to close the window.
Google Chrome,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the menu icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Settings from the drop-down.
  4. Select Show advanced settings... at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Find the Passwords and forms section.
  6. Uncheck Enable Autofill to fill out web forms in a single.
  7. Close out of the window.

Clear your browsing history, cookies, and cache

Select from the drop-downs below to learn how to clear your browsing history, cookies, and cache for your browser of choice.

Note: Windows users running up-to-date versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox can also use the keyboard combination shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Delete to call the splash screen to empty the cache, remove cookies, and delete browsing history.

Clear browsing history for windows devices
If your device runs off a Windows operating system and you useyou should
Internet Explorer,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the tools icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Internet Options from the drop-down.
  4. Check Delete browsing history on exit in the Browsing history section.
  5. Select Delete...
  6. A window will pop up; check the following boxes: Preserve Favorites website data, Temporary Internet Files and website files, Cookies and website data, and History.
  7. Select Delete to close the pop-up window.
  8. Select OK to close the window.
Mozilla Firefox,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the Firefox tab in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select History from the drop-down.
  4. Select Clear Recent History from the fly-out menu.
  5. Complete the Time range to clear field using the drop-down list; choose Everything.
  6. A warning window will pop up; expand the Details section.
  7. Check the following boxes: Browsing & Download History, Forms & Search History, Cookies, and Cache.
  8. Select Clear Now to close the window.
Google Chrome,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the menu icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Settings from the drop-down.
  4. Select Show advanced settings... at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Find the Privacy section and select Clear browsing data... 
  6. A window will pop up; check the following boxes: Browsing history, Cookies and other site and plug-in data, and Cached images and files.
  7. Select Clear browsing data to close the window.
Clear your browsing history for Macintosh devices
If your device runs off a Macintosh operating system and you useyou should
Apple Safari,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select Safari in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Reset Safari from the drop-down.
  4. A window will pop up; check the following boxes: Clear History and Remove all website data.
  5. Select Reset.
Mozilla Firefox,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select the Firefox tab in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select History from the drop-down.
  4. Select Clear Recent History from the fly-out menu.
  5. Complete the Time range to clear field using the drop-down list; choose Everything.
  6. A warning window will pop up; expand the Details section.
  7. Check the following boxes: Browsing & Download History, Forms & Search History, Cookies, and Cache.
  8. Select Clear Now to close the window.
Google Chrome,
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Select Chrome in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select Clear browsing data…
  4. A window will pop up; check the following boxes: Empty the cache and Delete cookies and other website data.
  5. Select Clear browsing data to close the window.

Clear your browsing history for phone and tablet devices
If your device is a tablet or phone and you're usingyou should
Safari on iPad,
  1. Select the settings icon, normally located near the middle of the iPad home screen.
  2. Select the Safari option from the left-hand side of the iPad-setting menu.
  3. Safari's settings will appear; select the following buttons: Clear History, Clear Cookies, and Clear Cache.
  4. A confirmation message will appear; select Clear to confirm.
an Android operating system,
  1. Go to your settings from the Android home screen.
  2. Find the Device section and select Application manager.
  3. Select your browser of choice from the list of apps.
  4. From the browser settings, select Clear Cache.
