Online Services: Tax Professional account creation requirements
To create a Tax Professional Online Services account, you must be an owner or officer of the firm, and act as the Administrator for the account. In addition, you must have one of the following:
- an Electronic Filer Identification Number (EFIN) with Electronic Return Originator (ERO) status issued by the IRS,
- a New York State attorney registration number issued by the New York State Unified Court System, or
- a New York State certified public accountant (CPA) license number issued by the New York State Education Department.
Tax Professional account verification
If you are creating a Tax Professional account with your attorney registration number or CPA license number, you must verify one of the following when you create your account:
- information reported on your New York State income tax return (Form IT-201 or IT-203) filed for one of the past five years (You will need to report the New York State taxable income and either the refund amount you requested or the amount you reported you owe.)
- Note: If you requested your New York State overpayment to be carried forward and did not request a refund on your personal income tax return, enter a single 0 in the Amount you owed field.
- confirmation that you have not filed a New York State income tax return for one of the past five years
If you do not have the filing information (found on your tax return) required to create your account, you can use Form DTF-505, Authorization for Release of Photocopies of Tax Returns and/or Tax Information, to request a copy of your return. For your protection, we cannot provide you with filing information over the phone.
