The deadline to apply for this program was March 8, 2012.
If you applied for the program and disagree with your assessor's determination you may file a complaint with the Board of Assessment Review. Use Form RP-56-BAR, Hurricane Irene/Tropical Storm Lee Assessment Relief Act - Complaint on Real Property Assessment
Properties that were catastrophically damaged by the storms may have been eligible for relief from 2011-2012 property taxes.
To be eligible, a property must:
* The requirement that a property must have lost 50% of its value applies to the value of the entire parcel: the land and any buildings attached to it. See examples below:
Sample Eligible Property
- The total value of a sample property is $250,000 prior to the flooding ($200,000 for the house and $50,000 for the land)
- After the flooding, the house is worth $75,000 (a decrease in the value of the house of $125,000)
- Assuming the value of the land did not decrease as a result of the flooding, the total reduction in value for the parcel would be 50% ($125,000 divided by $250,000)
- The parcel would be eligible for relief under the Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee Assessment Relief Act
Sample Ineligible Property
- The total value of a sample property is $500,000 prior to the flooding ($200,000 for the house and $300,000 for the land)
- After the flooding, the house is worth $60,000 (a decrease in the value of the house of $140,000 or 70%)
- Assuming the value of the land did not decrease as a result of the flooding, the total reduction in value for the parcel would be 28% ($140,000 divided by $500,000)
- The parcel would not be eligible for relief under the Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee Assessment Relief Act
